Barracks

“Sweat in training saves blood in battle.”

The Barracks is a military installation dedicated to the training and drilling of new recruits. Within its grounds, raw conscripts are transformed into disciplined soldiers through rigorous exercise, weapons practice, and tactical instruction. Cities with Barracks produce units that enter service with hard-won experience their untrained counterparts simply do not possess.

  • +1 XP for all newly trained military units in this city.

Strategy

Barracks are a worthwhile investment in cities you designate as military production centres. The +1 XP bonus means freshly trained units begin closer to their first promotion, giving them a meaningful edge in early engagements. This advantage compounds over the course of a game, as units that survive their first battles with a head start on experience snowball into veteran forces. Build Barracks early in frontier cities where you expect conflict, and in your primary military production city. In peaceful interior cities focused on economy or research, the 1 gold maintenance may not justify the benefit.

Historical Background

Organised military training facilities have existed since the earliest states. The ancient Spartans famously subjected boys to the agoge from age seven, a brutal training regimen that produced the most feared infantry in the Greek world. Roman legionary camps, or castra, featured permanent training grounds where recruits spent months learning formation fighting, marching, and fortification construction before ever seeing combat. The centurion’s vine staff, used liberally on laggards, became a symbol of the disciplinary culture that made Roman armies so effective. Medieval European castles served a similar dual purpose, housing garrisons whose knights and men-at-arms drilled in the courtyard between campaigns.
