Cossack
“The steppe is our mother, the sabre is our father, and freedom is our creed.”
The Cossack is Russia’s unique unit, replacing the standard Horseman. Born of the wild frontier lands of the southern steppe, Cossacks are fierce, independent horsemen who combine exceptional mobility with a warrior spirit forged by generations of borderland warfare.

Strategy
The Cossack’s defining trait is its extraordinary 4 Movement – the fastest unit available in the Classical Era by a wide margin. This speed advantage transforms early-game warfare. Cossacks can reach enemy territory before defenders are in position, intercept fleeing Settlers and Workers with ease, and retreat from unfavourable engagements that slower units cannot escape.
The Cossack’s combat stats are modest (7/3 compared to the Horseman’s 10/5), but speed compensates for many shortcomings. Use Cossacks for raiding and harassment rather than pitched battles. Pillage enemy improvements, snipe unescorted civilian units, and scout the map at blistering speed. With the March promotion granting an additional movement point, a Cossack can cover 5 hexes per turn – enough to traverse half a continent in a few turns. Upgrade to Knights when Chivalry is researched to transition your fast raiders into heavy shock cavalry.
Historical Background
The Cossacks emerged in the 15th and 16th centuries as communities of free warriors living on the southern frontiers of the Russian and Polish-Lithuanian states. The word “Cossack” derives from a Turkic term meaning “free man” or “adventurer,” and the Cossacks were precisely that – escaped serfs, religious dissidents, adventurers, and outlaws who carved out autonomous communities on the steppe, beyond the reach of central authority.
The Cossacks’ extraordinary horsemanship and fighting spirit made them invaluable to the Russian Empire as frontier defenders, scouts, and light cavalry. Cossack hosts – the Zaporozhian, Don, Kuban, Terek, and others – each maintained distinct traditions while serving the Tsar in exchange for autonomy and land rights. During Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812, Cossack cavalry harassed the Grande Armee relentlessly during its disastrous retreat from Moscow, cutting off foraging parties and destroying stragglers. Their reputation as fearsome irregular cavalry persisted through the Russian Civil War and beyond.
