University

“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” – Aristotle

The University is an institution of higher learning where the brightest minds of a civilisation gather to push the boundaries of human knowledge. Theologians, natural philosophers, mathematicians, and scholars of every discipline engage in structured study, debate, and experimentation. A University dramatically accelerates a city’s contribution to the empire’s research output.

Strategy

The University is the backbone of any serious science strategy, providing a substantial +4 research bonus that dwarfs the Library’s contribution. Since it requires a Library, ensure every city has one built before Education is researched so you can begin constructing Universities immediately. The 2 gold maintenance is a real cost, but the research payoff is worth it in virtually every city. Falling behind on Universities means falling behind on technology, which cascades into military, economic, and cultural disadvantage. In a science race, the player who builds Universities in the most cities the fastest will almost certainly reach critical late-game technologies first.

Historical Background

The concept of the university as an institution granting degrees and organising scholars into faculties originated in medieval Europe. The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is generally considered the oldest in the Western world, originally established as a school of law where students themselves hired and paid their professors. The University of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge followed in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, creating a network of institutions that became the intellectual engine of Europe. These early universities were closely tied to the Church, with theology holding pride of place, but they also fostered the study of logic, natural philosophy, medicine, and law – disciplines that would eventually fuel the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment.
