Mobile SAM

“Tracking. Locked. Fox one. Splash.”

The Mobile SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) is the modern evolution of ground-based air defence – a vehicle-mounted guided missile system capable of engaging aircraft at greater range and with far higher accuracy than its gun-based predecessor. It represents the cutting edge of anti-air technology.

Strategy

The Mobile SAM is the ultimate ground-based air defence unit. Its 3-hex interception range, combined with devastating bonuses against all aircraft types, creates a no-fly zone that enemy Fighters and Bombers enter at extreme peril. With 4 Movement, it can keep pace with your Tanks and armoured spearheads, providing air cover for fast-moving offensive operations.

The Mobile SAM’s ground combat capability is essentially non-existent – at 6 Attack, it cannot threaten any ground unit. However, its 14 Defence and 4 Movement make it surprisingly survivable. Deploy Mobile SAMs in pairs within your armoured formations to provide overlapping air defence coverage. Against an enemy with a strong air force, Mobile SAMs are not optional – they are the difference between your Tank columns advancing under protection and being shredded by unopposed Bomber strikes.

Historical Background

The development of surface-to-air missiles in the Cold War era transformed air defence from a statistical exercise in barrage fire to a precision engagement system. The Soviet SA-2 Guideline, first deployed in 1957, demonstrated the new technology’s potential when it shot down Francis Gary Powers’ U-2 reconnaissance aircraft over the Soviet Union in 1960. The missile’s introduction forced a fundamental rethinking of air tactics, as aircraft could no longer fly with impunity above the range of conventional anti-aircraft guns.

The 1973 Yom Kippur War provided a dramatic demonstration of mobile SAM effectiveness. Egyptian SA-6 Gainful batteries, deployed along the Suez Canal, inflicted devastating losses on the Israeli Air Force in the opening days of the conflict, temporarily negating Israel’s air superiority. The lessons of that war – that mobile SAM systems could deny air superiority even to a technologically advanced air force – shaped military doctrine for decades and drove the development of increasingly sophisticated electronic countermeasures and anti-radiation missiles.
