Archer

“Loose! Let them know the sky itself is our weapon.”

The Archer represents the first ranged military unit, marking a fundamental shift in the nature of warfare. Armed with simple bows and a quiver of arrows, these soldiers can strike enemies from a distance while remaining safely behind the front line.

Strategy

Archers are the cornerstone of early-game defence. Position them behind a melee unit – a Warrior or Spearman – and they can whittle down attackers without taking damage themselves. Two Archers behind a fortified Spearman on a hill can hold off a surprisingly large force.

Offensively, Archers are fragile but effective. Their 2-hex range allows them to bombard enemy units or soften up barbarian camps before your melee units close in. However, their 3 Defence makes them extremely vulnerable if caught in the open. Never leave an Archer unescorted, and always keep at least one melee unit between your Archers and the enemy.

Historical Background

The bow is among humanity’s oldest and most transformative inventions, with the earliest evidence of archery dating to approximately 64,000 years ago in South Africa. As a weapon of war, the bow allowed armies to inflict casualties at range for the first time, fundamentally altering tactical calculations. The composite bows of the ancient Near East, constructed from layers of wood, horn, and sinew, could launch arrows over 300 metres.

Archery played a decisive role in some of history’s most famous battles. At the Battle of Kadesh (1274 BCE), Egyptian and Hittite chariot archers clashed in what remains one of the best-documented battles of antiquity. The mass employment of archers defined warfare across cultures, from the renowned bowmen of the English longbow tradition to the mounted archers of the Eurasian steppe who terrorised settled civilisations for millennia.
